Chronic pain
Every pain is originally based on a pathological event, such as an injury, inflammation or something that presses on a nerve ending. Doctors usually try to find the cause of the pain and cure it. However, this often does not work - the pain has "taken on its own" - nerve cells transmit the pain that does not arise from any pathological process or from a pathological process that has long since subsided.
Whether the pain comes from the back, the joints, the head or from internal organs - no person can endure severe pain for a long time. Therefore, the body itself produces pain-relieving substances (e.g. endorphins). Pain medications mimic this effect; They either have an anti-inflammatory effect or they dampen the experience of pain in the brain. However, these substances have side effects or they work too briefly to provide real relief. Therefore, other concepts are used in pain therapy.
Chronic pain is pain that lasts for three to six months or frequently recurs during this period and severely impairs the quality of life of those affected. The repeated painful stimuli leave traces of pain and a pain memory develops. This means that those affected perceive even the slightest pain or even touch as unpleasant.
In contrast to acute pain, chronic pain does not represent a meaningful alarm signal that, for example, indicates an injury or illness, but is to be understood as an independent pain disorder that has no clearly identifiable cause.
How I can help
Pain therapy is one of my most important areas of activity. A precise anamnesis about the development and type of pain and all previous measures is helpful. A pain diary and records of medications already used can also be helpful. Since conventional medicine attaches little importance to the problem of “chronic pain,” it is all the more important to me to offer clear assistance.
A special EMDR treatment method enables the majority of patients to no longer perceive the pain as a psychological burden and also to no longer feel the intensity of the pain as strongly.
Chronic pain can also be treated with sLORETA neurofeedback.
This influences the electrical activities of the areas of the brain that process pain sensations. By influencing specific areas of the brain, pain memory and the negative affective components that accompany pain are also changed and, as a result, the pain tolerance of those affected is increased. This approach leads to a reduction in suffering. Many patients report a newfound quality of life, which enables them to lead a normal lifestyle.
Specialization in headaches or migraines
If you suffer from headaches or migraines, I offer special headache coaching. The focus here is on stress reduction, behavioral changes, changes in diet, exercise, relaxation and possibly targeted medication (in consultation with a specialist). With this coaching I can support you in significantly reducing migraine attacks and/or reducing their severity.
