Depression, Burn-Out

Burnout or depression?

A Burnout is when you feel bad because you once burned for something - and this flame has gone out. With depression, you feel similarly bad - but without ever having burned for something.

Burnout is a physical and mental exhaustion reaction caused by persistent stresses that the body and psyche can no longer cope with. The typical symptoms of burnout, such as fatigue, exhaustion, helplessness, sleep disturbances and anxiety are similar to those of depression.

Different stages can be observed in the course of burnout. At the beginning, there is a need for recognition and the compulsion to prove oneself, accompanied by the first signs of fatigue and exhaustion. This is followed by the resistance phase. Here, one's own values are reinterpreted so that regenerative and amusing events can be classified as unimportant. In addition, cynicism, withdrawal behavior and existential fears can be observed. In the exhaustion phase, those affected finally feel as if their own body is disconnected and they become increasingly depressed.

A Depression is not a sign of personal weakness and goes far beyond sorrow or everyday suffering. It affects not only the mind and brain, but the entire body. The symptoms of this disorder, such as sadness, anxiety, loss of interest, lack of energy, sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating, listlessness, and many more, can last for weeks, months, or even years without being recognized or associated with depression. Those affected are unable to change their physical and emotional state on their own in order to feel better again.
Since depressive disorders are not only mental illnesses, but also involve biological processes, they are usually accompanied by additional physical symptoms, such as headaches, breathing difficulties, heart problems, dizziness, and so on.

How I can help

In the case of depression as well as burnout, it is important to find out what the causes are. In the case of depression, these are often experiences of helplessness, perhaps also at a very young age; in the case of burnout, it is rather "inner voices" that drive one to do more than one's own body can do.
These origins can be worked out well in the treatment and then be identified by means of EMDR, IBT or ROMPC processed and reprocessed so that you no longer have any negative effects in the here and now.
Furthermore, through certain exercises I help to direct the focus back to the beautiful things in life, so that more good feelings can be felt again.
Techniques are also learned to intensify these good feelings.
In some cases, the development of daily and activity plans is useful in order to become active again and to be able to find sources of strength for one's own life.
